The Shutdown Is Over . . . What's Next?

By thirdbranchsolutions

The government shutdown is officially OVER at long last! But that doesn't mean that the government just jumps back into "business as usual." It will take time for the federal judiciary (and other federal government entities) to bounce back from the longest shutdown in U.S. history. Strategic post-shutdown planning can help.

The government shutdown is officially OVER at long last! But that doesn't mean that the government just jumps back into "business as usual."

Imagine how a private organization would be affected by being forcibly shut down for 6 weeks . . . How much money would be lost? How would employees be affected? How would the business and people recover and get back to normal operations?

Federal employees are returning to backlogs (on top of previously existing backlogs). They are returning to overflowing inboxes and a million demands on their attentions. People that were already spread thin will be stretched even thinner. The stress of uncertainty and financial anxiety will linger. Routines will have to be reset (again). And priorities adjusted. And most organizations (including the federal judiciary) will still just be operating under a continuing resolution - NOT a full budget - which means continued restrictions on spending.

Resentment may brew within and between teams based on whether a person, team, or category of work was deemed "essential" and whether individuals "got to" stay home and "not work" or whether they were mandated to continue to work without pay.

It's a lot to think about.

We've been spending time researching post-shutdown planning to help the judiciary prepare for this moment. We know court staff are busy and there will be one million and one things to do once the government "reopens." That's why 3B has prepared a webinar entitled "Post-Shutdown Planning for the Federal Judiciary" - to help courts take a moment to ensure they are approaching this period with clarity and intention, so that important considerations do not get lost in the shuffle.

The webinar is scheduled for TODAY, November 13, at 2:30 ET. And there's still time to register via this link: https://forms.gle/ToUS635y6L7Gd2QT6

Please feel free to share the link with your judiciary colleagues.

The courts operate best when they come together to discuss and share lessons learned and best practices. Come be a part of the discussion!

Attendees of the webinar will receive the presentation slide deck AND an editable post-shutdown planning checklist tailored for federal court units.
